Print Unchained: Fifty Years of Digital Printing, 1950-2000 and Beyond, A Saga of Invention and Enterprise by Ted Webster

As digital technology continues its transformation of how we work and communicate, a unique sourcebook is being pitched for a limited time at a special discount for single or multiple copies. This groundbreaking presentation book, which early readers assert is a must-have for industry newcomers and veterans alike, is entitled "Print Unchained: Fifty Years of Digital Printing, 1950-2000 and Beyond, A Saga of Invention and Enterprise."

Excerpt #1
The following can be found in Chapter 6: The Eighties, Defining Company--Hewlett-Packard, Oral History: Jim Hall on the Canon courtship and the birth of the LaserJet (page 173) of the book.

"Was there a channel marketing organization in place for you for the LaserJet launch?

Actually, when we started the project in the spring of '83 our only vision was that it be sold with the HP 3000 minicomputer by our direct sales force. That was the only way we knew at that time. Meanwhile HP had developed the HP 150 personal computer with a touch screen monitor. A small marketing group was put together to try to sell it through the COMDEX channel. As they were getting ready to go to COMDEX to show their computer to the dealers, we begged them to let us tag along. They had a two hour presentation for the dealers and they let us have about ten minutes.

Well, after an hour of the presentation most of the dealers had left. Our ten minutes came at the end. Two minutes into our demonstration of the LaserJet we had to stop because it seemed almost everyone had run out of the room. We wondered what we had done wrong. What they were doing was going to look for their top management because they knew they wanted to sell the LaserJet. Anyway, with all this excitement, we started to get some belief."
