Lexmark:
Successful in Trying Times |
The
digital printer market is approaching and in some cases
has reached a stage of maturity. Average industry revenue
growth for hardware and supplies is expected to be no
more than 5% through 2006. Lexmark has been bucking the
trend. It is one of the most consistently successful manufacturers
in the printer industry. |

HP

a surprising move, on May 14, 2003, HP and Kodak announced
their decision to dissolve their three-year old Phogenix
joint venture. Phogenix was established to develop digital
ink jet photofinishing mini-labs for on-site use in retail
establishments. Why would HP and Kodak shut down such

IGAS
Review |
IGAS
(International Graphic Arts Show) is held annually in
Tokyo, Japan, as a showcase for the Japanese Graphic Arts
industry along the lines of the much larger international
Drupa and the similarly sized Graph Expo in the US. There
are at least two key differentiating characteristics of
IGAS with respect to other shows. The first is that the
show is heavily focused towards China as a market opportunity
for Japanese suppliers. The second is that Japan is home
base for the development of many digital print core technologies
which leads to some unique cooperations. This review lists
developments we feel to be of special significance to
an international audience. Companies covered are Miyakoshi,
Showa, PFU Kenroku, Mimaki, Olympus/Riso joint venture.
For each we provide brief company description, key product,
product specification (including technology origination
where known) and product market focus/need for the product. |

Eco/lite
Solvents & Their Impact on the Wide Format Graphics Market |
Last
year we saw the introduction of eco/lite solvent wide
format ink jet printers from companies such as Roland,
Mimaki and Mutoh. These printers filled a niche in the
market between lower priced aqueous printers primarily
used for indoor applications and aggressive solvent printers
used primarily for outdoor applications. This report is
a brief commentary on the impact that these printers are
expected to have on the wide format graphics market. |
