China:
From Class Struggle to Growth Rates
|
Over
the last few years, Chinese manufacturers have taken
Xaar and Spectra heads and have begun manufacturing
wide and superwide ink jet printers. What is China's
role in the wide format printing market? Who are the
Chinese manufacturers and how successful will they be?
This report answers these questions. The report is divided
into two parts: "About China," which describes the changes
in China since the death of Mao Tse Tung in 1978 and
"Digital Printer Manufacturers in China," which estimates
the number of printers manufactured in China, outlines
the issues surrounding digital printer manufacturing
in China and provides profiles of leading Chinese and
Korean OEMs.

Ink
Jet Coated Media: 1987 - 2003
|
The
market for media used in ink jet printers has grown
impressively in the past 15 or so years. The coated
media part of the narrow format ink jet market is a
relatively smaller part of the total media market than
is the coated media market for wide format ink jet printers.
Both markets are still growing quite impressively. In
general the wide format market may be considered not
to have fulfilled half its potential after only 10 years
of market activity.

Wide
Format Ink Jet Solvent Market: It's Crowded Out There
|
Over
the last few years, we have seen the introduction of
a range of aggressive solvent ink jet printers as well
as aqueous-based non-solvent vinyl printing solutions
and lite solvent solutions. This report addressed the
following questions: What types of companies are buying/will
buy each type of printer and why? What is, if any, the
impact of non-solvent vinyl printing solutions and lite
solvents on the aggressive solvent market? Will they
create a new, incremental market or take from existing
volume?

POP Print Advertising: $44 Billion
|
I.T.
Strategies estimates that worldwide POP expenditures
were $44 billion in 2002. Analog printing technologies
(screen, offset, flexo, gravure and photo) make up more
than three fourths of the market; digital printing technologies
(ink jet and electrophotography) about 25%. The dominant
print technology is screen with 46% of the market, followed
by ink jet with 18%.

|
I.T.
Strategies estimates that in 2002 worldwide outdoor
advertising expenditures for print were $16.7 billion.

General
Commercial Printing: Technological and Economic Forces
Reshaping the Industry.
Two
formats available for this report: 8.5" x 11"
report version or 24" x 24" poster version
|
The
traditional commercial printing industry worldwide is
undergoing considerable change. Within the commercial
print industry some segments such as packaging are not
undergoing the steep declines of other segments such
as general commercial printing. General commercial printing
has undergone a fundamental shift in volume and value.
The economic engine that drives the print industry has
shifted gears and is taking off in a new direction.
Growth in traditional print is no longer tied to growth
in the economy. This has resulted in a greatly oversupplied
and highly competitive market and left commercial printers
with little revenue to reinvest in new equipment and
technology.

2003
and the Digital Printer Industry: First Nine Months Tell
the Tale. |
How
did the digital printing industry fare in 2003? To attempt
to answer this question, I.T. Strategies reviewed available
financial data for five OEMs involved in the digital printer
industry (HP, Lexmark, Canon, Ricoh and Xerox) whose combined
printer revenues comprise more than 50% of total OEM digital
printer/copier revenues. Report covers published financial
data for the first nine months of 2003. I.T. Strategies
estimates that for the first nine months of 2003, these
companies together had total company revenues of more
than $100 billion and digital printer/copier revenues
of $53 billion. |

Wide
Format Graphics OEM 2002 Review |
From
its 36" aqueous beginnings in 1993, the wide format graphics
market has become highly competitive with more than 15
OEMs in 2002 selling into the market. The segmentation
for this report is by printer width (24", 36", 42-44",
50-70", and greater than 70") and by type of ink (aqueous,
solvent and flatbed/UV). As can be seen from the graphic
included in the report, the market in each of these areas
is highly competitive with companies like Epson and HP
moving up in quality for indoor applications and companies
such as VUTEk, Nur and Scitex offering lower-priced products
to respond to increased competition. |

Ink
Jet Flatbed Printers Who's Buying |
I.T.
Strategies estimates that in 2002 about 165 digital flatbed
printers were sold. This report profiles 32 buyers of
digital flatbed printers (13% of the installed base).
The research revealed that
1) it's all about Point of Purchase (POP) printing; 2)
two different types of companies are buying these printers
and 3) these companies employ a variety of printing technology
- both digital and analog - to satisfy customer needs. |

iGen3:
One Year Later |
Xerox's
iGen3 Digital Color Press was officially introduced on
October 12, 2002. The iGen3 was the result of more than
$1 billion in R&D. The press is a key component in Xerox's
plan to take a bigger share of the digital color and production
print markets. This report describes the development of
the iGen3 and profiles 19 print-for-pay companies that
have installed iGen3 presses. Data collected includes
type of business, size of business (if available), company
location, type of printing technologies employed and primary
applications for both the company and the iGen 3 (if available). |
